Matthew 2 – sages from the East, flight to Egypt, return to Nazareth

1 Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea during the reign of King Herod. At that time, scholars from the Eastern Land arrived in Jerusalem and asked: 2   Where is the Jewish king who was just born? We saw his star in the east and came to bow to him.” 3 This newspaper greatly alarmed King Herod, and not only him, but also all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 4 The king summoned all the leading priests and teachers of the law and asked them where Christ was to be born. 5 They answered him: In BetlÉmhim In Judea. prophet that prEDOPhimdhiml: 6 ‘BetlÉme, you are not the lastie in Judea, of you will come out inÉthe water whichy will take care of morJ people as a trapey about sheep.’ (Michaeh 5:1 and 3)  7 Herod secretly invited the scholars from the East and asked them in detail when the star appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and entrusted them with the task: 8 JDhimte and dorgoodhim detecthimte inse about this diethimti, and at You will find them, prijORTell meamit; porI’m going toÉ bow down.9 The scholars heard the king and set off on their journey. And lo! The star they saw in the east showed them the way to where the child was. 10 They were unspeakably happy about it. 11 They entered the house and found a child there with his mother Maria. They fell to his knees before him, bowed to him, and gave him precious gifts – gold, incense and precious oil. 12 In a dream, however, God warned them not to return to Herod. So they chose a different return trip.

Escape to Egypt

13 After the scholars left, Joseph had a dream in which the angel ordered him: ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee with them to Egypt; stay there until I tell you. For Herod will search for the child to deprive them of their lives.’ 14 Josef got up at night, took the child and the mother and went with them to Egypt. 15 They were there until the death of King Herod. God’s prediction made by the prophet was fulfilled: ‘I called my son from Egypt.’ 16 When Herod recognized that the Eastern scholars had disappointed him, he became very angry and had all the boys up to the age of two killed in Bethlehem and its surroundings. He estimated this age based on the testimony of scholars. 17 That’s when Jeremiah’s prophecy was fulfilled: 18  “ slyShim nauraek, plA A Bhimananie. it mother of a mourningaina SCÉ sons and neda segrebeIT, thereforete are deadie.

Return to Nazareth

19 When Herod died, he appeared to Joseph again in a dream of an angel 20 and prompted him: Take the Diethim even his mother and the vrahu to go to Israel’s country because those who have already died They strived about a child’s life.’ 21 Josef obeyed and they returned. However, 22 was very frightened when anhimdhiml, that Herod’s successor in Judea is his son ArchaLaos. In his dream, he received another instruction from God to go to Galilee. 23 He settled in Nazareth, and thus another prophecy about the Messiah was fulfilled, for he would be called Nazareth.
